You Say Tomato, I say Tomato

By kellimcgill

I was chatting with some ladies at work this week about words that our kids mispronounce…but it’s so darn cute that we don’t EVER want them to stop saying it that way. Elle used to say “efalant” instead of elephant. Adorable, right? She STILL says “glip gloss” instead of lip gloss. Seriously, I melt every time. If she’s still calling it glip gloss at 32 I’ll be a happy mom.

What are some of the things that your kids mispronounce in the most adorable ways?

E calls chapstick “Chexmix”. Also, instead of “Mucho Gusto” (nice to meet you) he says Muko Juice-to. It kills us.

  2. Ron Says:

My daughter use to say, “Tritickle” instead of tricycle. She thanked her grandfather for her new bike so she wouldn’t have to ride the “Tritikle” any more. I thought he was gonna tear up…

Jack says elephant the same way. He says “Ho-pis-tal” for hospital and instead of “can I” he’s always said “cam I” . . . as in, “Cam I have a drink of water.” He’s started correcting himself on that and it breaks my heart.

Cooper used to say “pine-que-pone” instead of porcupine. However…do you remember the story about Cooper saying a naughty, NAUGHTY, word instead of truck? Yeah…those were good times. I am glad that the one time he was saying “dump truck” in the church nursery and it sounded like “dumb…well, you know” that my good friend was in the nursery working that day and she knew we don’t talk like that at home…yikes….

jack henry mispronounces lots of things right now, but most of them sound like bad words.

and for some reason, i’m drawing a blank on things my older boys mispronounced, but i loved those and am glad they are written down somewhere!

my brother called parmesan cheese “cardinal john cheese” when we were kids, and we still call it that sometimes…even matt has adopted it into his vocab and he didn’t know jake as a kid!

  6. Val Sprague Says:

Miles calls his pajamas, “pajamees”. I love that! He also says any word with an “or” sound at the end with an “oy” sound instead: “foy” instead of “four”, “stoy” instead of “store”. I’m sure he’ll need speech in kindergarten for that, but it’s so stinkin’ cute I can hardly stand it!

Mason said “grill” for “girl” for the longest time. “There’s a grill at my school and she said…”. It used to crack us up. And for a while there was show called “Boy Meets Grill” on Food Network that Colby and I swore must have been a love story, rather than a food show!

  7. Scott Says:

sometimes I confuse which swear words are appropriate for which situation.

  8. Robin Says:

Man I wish I wrote ours down!! I know mine had some. Someone help me remember!!!

I Love the frick or freet!

  9. Jeff your Uncle Says:

Jeffrey used to say Technogoly in stead of Technology. Psigetti instead of Spagetti.

Jimmy used to want Q instead of chocolate milk. (The can of Quick drink mix had a big Q on it.)

Sadly they grew to stop doing that…. :(

  10. Teresa Says:

Our granddaughter also used to pronounce “girl” as “grill.” Once she asked her mother if boys were allowed to each grill cheese sandwiches…

  11. Teresa Says:

oops, that’s “eat” grill cheese sandwiches…yikes what a long day.

  12. Kristina Silverman Says:

When I was pregnant with Julia, Allison used to say that Mommy goes to the “HOS-I-BOO” (hospital) to get a baby out of her tummy.

and she STILL calls lemonade “Lemelade” I love it.

  13. Jamie Says:

    First time commenter.

My three year old calls spaghetti “PASKETEE.” Gets me every time.

  14. Tammy(MOM) Says:

    humpie dumpies…. you guess who

  15. ofebers Says:

We have glip gloss in our house too. A1 sauce is 81 sauce. Hospitals are hostables. I could go on and on. I was so sad when Oliver started pronouncing his “L’s”

  16. paulshaver Says:

    Avril says nerziss for nervous.

    Example:
As she watched Cinderella being chased by the horses, Avril points to the tv and says “NERZISS!”

    Also Crunchy-ola for Crunchy Granola

  17. Russ Says:

Eliot just recently started pronouncing “tortuga” (Spanish for “turtle”) correctly. Up until very recently he called it a “took-a-day,” and it was one of my favorite things. We still have “mucho-justo,” tho (see Katie’s comment) which is pretty darn cute. Wow, look at us with the Spanish! Well, the mis-pronounced Spanish. It shouldn’t be that difficult, tho, right? Bro-dar, sis-tar…. :)
